It changes hands several times, and at each handover a different company holds it, applies its own rules and keeps its own record.

This page walks the route hop by hop and names what changes at each one. It describes the mechanics of the transfers, not whether any of them should be made: the statute that governs online money gaming in India is summarised in the legal note on our Bitcoin casinos guide, and nothing here is legal or financial advice.

How many hops are there really?

Rupees leave a bank account and reach an exchange or broker.

The exchange converts rupees into a coin at its own quoted rate.

The coin moves from the exchange to a wallet the user controls, or is sent onward directly.

The coin moves across a blockchain to an address the operator supplies.

The operator credits an internal balance, denominated in whatever unit the operator chooses.

Every step runs backwards on the way out, at different rates and different fees.

Six hops out and six back. A round trip therefore crosses twelve points at which a value can change, and only one of those twelve is the game.

What happens at the exchange hop?

The exchange is the only participant in the chain that touches rupees, and it is the most heavily documented one. Since a Ministry of Finance notification dated 7 March 2023, entities providing services relating to virtual digital assets are reporting entities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, and the Financial Intelligence Unit issued anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing guidelines for them dated 10 March 2023.

Two consequences follow, and both are practical rather than theoretical. Identity verification at this hop is not optional and not threshold-based; it is a condition of the account. And the transaction record is a reporting record, retained and reportable by the exchange.

An FIU registration is a reporting-entity registration, not a licence to conduct any particular business. It authorises nothing on its own.

What does the conversion actually cost?

Three separate deductions sit in the same step, and they are usually quoted separately or not at all:

The exchange’s trading fee, a percentage of the trade.

The spread between the buy and sell quote, which is not a line item but is a real cost, taken twice on a round trip.

Tax deducted at source. Under section 194S of the Income-tax Act, tax at 1 per cent is deductible on consideration for the transfer of a virtual digital asset once the annual value crosses ₹10,000, or ₹50,000 for specified persons, a category that covers individuals and Hindu undivided families without business income and those with business turnover up to ₹1 crore.

The 1 per cent is a deduction against tax, not a charge, and it is creditable in the return. It is still 1 per cent of the money that stops moving at that moment.

The full set of tax provisions that touch this route is set out on our page about tax on money from online games.

What happens at the wallet hop?

Custody changes. While a coin sits at an exchange the exchange holds the key; in a self-custody wallet the holder does, and a lost key is not recoverable by anyone.

This is the hop with no support desk. Every other participant in the chain — the bank, the exchange, the operator — has a company behind it that can be written to. A wallet does not.

What happens at the network hop?

The coin is broadcast to a blockchain, pays that network’s fee, and waits for confirmations. Both the fee and the wait depend on which network is used, and the same nominal coin can travel over more than one. Sending on a network the receiving side does not support is the single most common way funds are lost at this step.

Which networks the operators in our reference library actually accept, and how the coin lists compare, is set out on our page about networks, coins and confirmations.

What happens when the operator credits the balance?

The unit changes again, and this is the least visible conversion in the whole chain. Deposits arrive in a coin; operator terms are frequently written in euro or dollars. Of the 14 brands in our reference library that publish a withdrawal ceiling, eight state it in euro, three in US dollars, two in USDT and one in euro and dollars together.

So a balance funded in a coin can be governed by a limit stated in a currency the user never held. The conversion between them happens at the operator’s own rate, and none of the clauses read states which rate that is.

What that mismatch does to a balance over time is the subject of our page on the rate between deposit and withdrawal.

Where does the route stall on the way back?

At two points, and both are contractual rather than technical.

The first is the ceiling. A withdrawal larger than the published cap is not refused; it is spread across periods, so the balance returns in instalments determined by arithmetic. The published figures range from 4,000 euro a day to 1,000,000 USDT a week — a spread wide enough that the cap has to be read on the specific site, and 86 of the 100 brands publish no figure at all. The published ones are tabulated on our page about withdrawal limits.

The second is the document request. Of 49 verification clauses read across the library, every one leaves the decision to ask for identity documents with the operator, and the request typically attaches to the withdrawal rather than to the deposit. Where in the route that lands, and what the five clauses that name a figure actually say, is covered on our page about when a casino asks for documents.

What the route looks like end to end

Hop

Who holds the money

What is deducted

What is recorded

Bank to exchange

Bank, then exchange

Transfer charges, if any

Bank statement

Rupees to coin

Exchange

Trading fee, spread, 1 per cent TDS under section 194S

Exchange record, PMLA reporting

Exchange to wallet

Wallet holder

Withdrawal fee set by the exchange

On-chain transaction

Wallet to operator

Network, then operator

Network fee

On-chain transaction

Credit to balance

Operator

Nothing stated in the clauses read

Operator’s internal ledger only

Balance back out

Operator, then network

Cap, verification hold, network fee

Operator ledger, then on-chain

Only the fifth row is invisible from outside.
